Slip casting porcelain was the technique used for this project. 3D printed plastic positives were used to create the plaster molds.
The cast piece was a grater inspired by the Japanese oroshigane, a fine grater. The idea for my porcelain grater was that one could finely grate ginger, and then pour soy sauce and oil directly into the little bowl, easily creating a single serving of fresh dipping sauce for a meal.
I experimented with different ways of creating the grating surface, as well as tried casting in different colors and various glazing options. The grater was made round to fit well in your hand as well on a table setting. The stack-ability makes them easy to store and plate.
